How Our Co-op Works
-
AUCP enrolls and maintains students from 6 weeks to pre-Kindergarten age, and maintain small class sizes of between 6 and 14 children. Our day runs from 9:30-12:30pm and includes snack and lunch.
-
Each classroom includes a full-time, dedicated teacher and parent helpers who help execute the curriculum, attend to the needs of the children (i.e., play with the children, help problem solve, oversee outdoor play and nourishment and provide bathroom assistance)
-
Parents play a very active role in their child's classroom. Co-oping commitments run from 9am-1pm. If your child is enrolled: 1 day per week you will co-op every other month, 2 days per week you will co-op 1-2 times per month, 3 days per week you will co-op 2-3 times per month
- Depending on the number of enrolled children, families commit between 4-7 hours per school year to the upkeep and maintenance of buildings and grounds of the school.
-
Families dedicate themselves to an assignment that helps run the co-op every year (e.g., Fundraising, Community Building, Teacher support, Technology, Accounting, etc.)
-
As parent co-opers are technically licensed educators by Virginia State standards, each parent who co-ops completes 8 Continuing Education hours per year, which parents say make them better parents.
-
We foster community through in-person pick-up and drop-off of our children, monthly activities, onsite continuing education opportunities, "meals on wheels" for families with new babies or experiencing hardship and through the day-to-day interactions with community members by being side-by-side in the classroom.
